Advantages of Dental Implants

Many people do not realize the repercussions of having missing teeth. Not only do missing teeth adversely affect a person’s appearance, ability to chew, and ability to speak clearly, but they can also transform the physical anatomy of the face and lead to premature aging.

Much like the muscles of the body will atrophy without adequate exercise, the facial bones will deteriorate if they are not regularly stimulated by chewing forces. Dental implants are the only tooth replacement option to prevent bone loss from occurring. The implants are securely anchored into the jawbone so that they maintain the volume, density, and shape of the facial bones in the same way natural teeth would.

It may be tempting to choose a less expensive “quick fix” like a dental bridge for tooth replacement, but when you consider the long-term advantages of dental implants, the investment is more than worthwhile.

Tooth restorations with dental implants get their support from the titanium screw that is permanently fused into the jawbone. An abutment connects the titanium screw to a crown, which is the visible structure that looks and functions like a natural tooth. Conversely, a dental bridge gets its support from neighboring teeth. Healthy teeth that surround the missing tooth will be worn down and are capped with a crown that supports the false tooth. Since there is no support directly beneath the false tooth, there is a possibility for bone loss in that area over time. Also, if one of the teeth supporting a dental bridge fails, the entire bridge must be replaced. Dental implants are inserted directly into the area of the missing tooth and do not require altering surrounding teeth.

Dentures are another “quick fix” for missing teeth. Unlike dental implants, dentures can slip and affect chewing and speech. They also require special maintenance outside of regular teeth cleaning and they are not guaranteed to last. Dental implants are permanently fused to the jawbone and provide support that lasts a lifetime.

Bridges and dentures can be difficult to clean. Since dental implants function just like natural teeth, you would apply the same standards of hygiene and care as you would with natural teeth. No special diet is required, and you do not need to avoid particular foods or beverages to make them last.
